Here’s what BobbyG means when he says “Coach”:
Coaching is about partnering to help you reach your goals. It is less about telling you what to do and more about helping you discover your best path to progress. It’s about creating a safe space to “fail” and about supporting you until you’re successful.
Here are five ways you can benefit from working with a coach:
#1: Help to Clarify your Vision and Direction
For example:
Let’s say you want to use sprinting and the pursuit of sport as your motivation and your exercise focus. I would help you clarify what that looks like for you. In my case, I want to be regionally competitive (i.e. top 3 finisher) and qualify for All-American status.
#2: Help to Strategize your Actions
Building on the previous example, we would discover ways to train so that you could accomplish your goal. In my case, I use mostly high-intensity bodyweight interval training (HIBWIT) and I use plant-based nutrition.
#3: Help to Upgrade your Skills
For example:
What do you need to know to be better at what you’re doing? In my case, I schedule training sessions (or video evaluations) with coaches who can evaluate my technique and provide helpful pointers.
#4: Help to Optimize your Environment
Let’s say you’re having trouble keeping your weight down. A coach could evaluate your kitchen, for example, and make suggestions as to how to set up your environment for better success (i.e. which foods to allow into the pantry). In my case it’s how can I arrange my home so I have a space to do my workouts.
#5: Help to Master your Mindset
Mahatma Ghandi once said,
“Your beliefs become your thoughts, Your thoughts become your words,
Your words become your actions, Your actions become your habits,
Your habits become your values, Your values become your destiny.”
A coach will help you process how you “process” and help you gain victory over beliefs – and by extension behaviors – that limit your success.
